Hong Kong Island Nightlife

Hong Kong Island nightlife is well-known for its numerous entertainment zones, with two areas particularly standing out for their range of bars, pubs and clubs: Wan Chai and Lan Kwai Fong. Situated just a short distance from Hong Kong's Central District, Wan Chai is large and comprises different zones with the bars and entertainment venues on the few streets near to the immigration tower, the Hong Kong Exhibition Centre and Central Plaza.

The intersection of Lockhart Road, Jaffe Road and Luard Road mark the epicentre of Wan Chai's nightlife, and here you'll find everything from theme bars with Filipino live 'acts', to seedier joints, where girls in suggestive clothing will try to coerce passers by inside for a very expensive drink, a pole dancing show, and more. Armani/Privé Rooftop Bar

Being under the direction of the official Giorgio Armani Group and boasting an exclusive located right in the heart of Hong Kong’s central business district, there’s no guessing what’s in store here: glamour, and lots of it. Although the views from the outside terrace aren’t particularly far reaching, the looming skyscrapers overhead do make for a pretty cool place to enjoy some fancy cocktails. The real sophistication is inside, however, with Armani/Privé combing a bar and restaurant with lots of swanky features like an incredible glowing orange bar, walls decked in LCD screens and plush seating lit by electronic candle light. Cocktails are as inventive as the decor but you will be paying around $130 upwards a pop.

Beijing Club

Coming at Beijing Club feels like you’ve arrived to the epicentre of the clubbing scene in Hong Kong. Located smack-bang in the middle of the island’s main nightlife district of Lan Kwai Fan (Central, Hong Kong Island), the three floors of dance rooms cater for hundreds of revellers, although often some floors will be closed off to create a more intimate feel on quieter nights. As well as three big bars, several swanky seating areas and numerous DJ booths, the club is tripped out with huge LCD screens set against contemporary Chinese murals, whilst the state-of-the-art sound system and visuals are good enough to satisfy even the most seasoned of ravers. Open Tuesdays to Saturday from 22:30 with free entry for ladies most nights (men pay $200-400 but get a free drink!).

Boca Tapas and Wine Bar

The name is self-explanatory enough; Bocas is on street level and especially enjoyable in summer when customers can sit outside, enjoying the evening breeze and the views. Background music ranges from funky flamenco to lively acid jazz, while the décor and design are suitably impressive. The round-edged bar and banquettes add a sophisticated touch to the place while bright colour schemes liven up the overall feel. And the drinks? With an 80-label wine list and a good cocktail choice you're not going to go wrong here.

Bulldog's Bar & Grill

A real down-home pub, without the actual sawdust on the floors, Bulldogs still looks a lot like an ale house back home, and as such attracts a lot of nostalgic clientele. It features a fairly large inside space and has a wide selection of European and Australian lagers. Major sporting events are televised here – both Australian and British – and their selection of British and Australian pub food is some of the best in town.

Bungalow Club

Formerly known as Prive Club, Bungalow in the popular Lan Kwai Fon area is one of the top nightclubs in Hong Kong, and welcomes a mixed crowd of young locals, expats, glamorous models and fashionistas, as well as a splattering of tourists. The vibe of each night here varies depending on the event; expect sponsored nights with lots of drinks flowing and photo-shoots, as well as one off DJ international events for those more serious about their dance music. The undeniable swanky club is comprised of the basement floor of Century Square with a dance floor, private seating areas, two bars and a main DJ booth. Dress code leans more towards smart than casual.

DIZZI Club

A relative newcomer on Hong Kong’s clubbing scene is DIZZI club, part of the Magnum Entertainment Group responsible for the already well-established Magnum Club. State-of-the-art visuals and sound systems have been installed to enhance the clubbing experience, and the club welcomes some of the best local and international underground DJs to play on a weekly basis. Location is another plus factor, located right in the heart of Central at Lan Kwai Fong, Hong Kong’s number one nightlife area. Expect doors to open as late as 23:00, with the last revellers leaving as the sun is coming up.

Club 18

Club 18 opened in 2013 in the very heart of Hong Kong’s lively Central district. Despite high rents in this affluent part of town, management have set out to keep price of drinks and entrance fees low, setting Club 18 aside from the rest of the slightly more mainstream completion nearby. Music policy here also leans towards the more underground scene, with some of the best up and coming DJs taking to the decks, flying in from all over the world to keep the crowd dancing into the early hours. Decor, however, is more like your typical Central club, with its neon purple floor, plush plastic-looking VIP booths and shiny walls helping to reflect the laser beams across the dance floor.

Club 71

In stark contrast to Hong Kong’s aesthetically conscious high-rise bars and plethora of swanky new lounges, the small and slightly dingy Club 71 has its priorities elsewhere. Heralded as one of the city’s best dive bars, this popular spot has become a mini-institution for the island’s writers, artists, political activists and academics who often come to wind down over a few drinks. The atmosphere is friendly and drinks are reasonably priced for this part of town, although a gin and tonics is about as fancy as the cocktails get.

Dragon-i Club

With over 12 years in the game, the much-talked-about Dragon-i nightclub near Central Station is one of the longest running dance clubs on the island. Whilst many Hong Kong nightlife venues come and go – thanks in no small part to the rising rental costs in downtown Hong Kong – Dragon-i has survived the test of time, welcoming the island’s trendiest people through its doors who come to eat, drink, dance and generally look pretty seven days-a-week. Decor is a sexy blend of Chinese with sleek modern touches, whilst music covers all corners of the dance music world, depending on who’s on the decks. Contemporary Asian food is served from noon until 15:00, and the club nights start to warm up at around midnight.

Drop

Now you're talking attitude – at the door or at the bar the question is 'just how hip do you think I am?' Pretty good music, attractive clientele and an intimate feel, despite the cliquish side coming out some nights but this is because everyone knows each other there and it's a small place. When it's hot it's hot and when it's not, it's most definitely not.

Dusk till Dawn

One of the better venues for a good evening out in Wan Chai. It attracts a mostly expat and Southeast Asian clientele, who come to take advantage of its 12:00 – 21:00 happy hour (15:00 – 21:00 on Sat and Sun), food and snack menu served until 05:00, and nightly live music starting at 22:00. Open Monday through Friday from 12:00 – 06:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 15:00 to 06:00. Pretty crowded most nights and there's a bit of flesh trading going on but nothing too unreasonable.

Fringe Club Roof Garden

Astroturf on the roof, cool drinks and good views just about sums up Fringe Club Roof Garden. The Fringe Club Bar is where the alternative arts crowd gathers for drinks and discussion. The choice of drinks might be limited but this is one of the more convivial places for a civilized evening out in Central. It is also one of the only open-air bars in the area and is considered a perfect respite from the madness going on at street level below.

Fu Lu Shou Bar

This hidden gem has been one of the most talked about rooftop bars amongst locals since its opening in March 2014. Whilst most lofty bars on the island specialise in gorgeous views, fancy seating and provide an altogether more refined vibe, Fu Lu Shou Bar presents a far more laidback scene. The funky outside wall art is undeniably hipster-friendly, as is the retro Chinese decor throughout the industrial-esque inside area. Meaning ‘happiness, prosperity and longevity’, Fu Lu Shou definitely succeeds in delivering on the first term, with their feel-good selection of Chinese favourites such as sweet and sour chicken and noodle broths (from $130), as well as a long and inventive range of cocktails starting at $110. Find it tucked away on Hollywood Road, a few minutes from Central Station.

Gecko Lounge and Wine Bar

Gecko is a little hard to find – down a dark side street, under an escalator. But it's a cool and laid-back spot packed with in-the-know regulars propping up the bar counter or discussing film, art and music at the tables. Gecko features DJs or live bands - usually jazz during the week – and admittedly does get loud and this, combined with good drinks, equals a free-flowing ambience – in other words a little wild.

Joe Banana's

Joe Bananas has played host to the rich and famous. Stars like Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, Glenn Frey, Mel Gibson, Jean Claude Van Damme, Jackie Chan and recently Nicholas Cage, have all enjoyed the overwhelming party atmosphere of Joe Banana's. No one can quite put their finger on just why it is so successful – it's probably a case of being famous for being famous (or, more likely it's because it is known as a good pick up spot) but it's become an institution. Wednesday is Ladies' Night, with free drinks for women from 21:00 to 04:00.

Kee Club

This bar is mostly – but certainly not exclusively – aimed at the more mature crowd. Not to say that it's conservative – far from it, as the drinks flow and the music can get pretty hot. With Picassos on the walls and antique paintings, rugs and statues and various hidden salons to lounge in, it's a world away from the neon-lit madness outside. Classy, so dress up for it.

K-Town Bar & Grill

This smart Hong Kong nightlife spot occupies the ground floor space in what was once an old metal works, and has maintained the rustic, industrial feel with its exposed ceiling vents, worn down concrete walls and original tiled flooring. However, K-Town Bar & Grill creates a contemporary feel at the same time, with new light installations, a long leather sofa and a wide range of cocktails and modern European food served throughout the day and late into the night.

Lan Kwai Fong

Lively Lan Kwai Fong consists of a few streets in the Central area forming a rectangle that was previously used by hawkers before the Second World War. Today the zone is home to some of the best bars and clubs in Hong Kong earning itself the moniker ‘party central’.

How to get there: To get there take a taxi or MTR to Central Station Exit D2 or the Airport Express to Hong Kong Station Exit B2. Parking is available on Arbuthnot Road.

Le Dome de Cristal

If guzzling ludicrously expensive Champagne, savouring delectable European cuisine and kicking back in overly opulent surroundings is your thing, look no further than Le Dome de Cristal. Housed in Central’s ‘The Galleria’, this is world’s first ever Cristal-branded bar, and the stunning decor here is inspired by Louis Roederer’s  mansion (the producers of the exclusive bubbly), with gold, white and cream tones set around an impressive dome-shaped ceiling overhead. Tapas-style offerings like their chilli basil prawns or fried chicken tulips start at around $140, although it’s no surprise that you’ll pay more like $400 for dishes like their Alaskan crab meat with imperial caviar. Being a Cristal-themed bar, expect a vast range of old and new bottles of the exclusive brand, as well as a whole list of Champagne based cocktails starting from around $150.

Lily & Bloom

Part bar - part restaurant, the ultra-hip Lily & Bloom in Central Hong Kong is an unquestionably handsome venue, impressing from the moment you step in. The abundance of warm wooden tones, swish leather sofas and dark, broody lighting all draw comparisons with a speakeasy bar from prohibition America, whilst the food and drinks menu shouts more modern bistro, with the likes of roasted bone marrow, handmade pasta and raw seafood all on the menu. Embrace the atmosphere by ordering something equally as classy at the bar, such as their popular dry martini or a classic old fashioned. Dress to impress and act cool if you spot an A-list celebrity.

Magnum Club

If glitz, glam and bass-heavy music is your thing, then Central’s popular Magnum Club should be high up on your list of clubs to hit in Hong Kong. Staging regular parties, DJ events and themed nights, Magnum has accumulated a loyal following of party-hungry locals, although you can inevitably expect a large proportion of the crowd to be made up of tourists and business guests, thanks to its prominent location one block away from Lan Kwai Fong. Entry varies depending on the night, but you can expect to pay around HK$200-400 on the door. The spacious, open plan club features a large bar, dance floor, central DJ booth and some VIP zones where you can have your bottles of personally delivered to you with sparklers.

PLAY Club

PLAY Club is one of the biggest and best dance clubs on the island, and considering the quality and quantity of nightlife in Hong Kong, that’s quite a feat. The PLAY brand originally opened up across town before recently relocating to Central, and now boasts 8,000 square feet of dance floor, three bars and a DJ booth. The clubs holds up to 1,000 people, although it only usually reaches capacity on the weekends of if a big name is in town. Find PLAY Club at the On Hing Building just a few minutes’ walk from Central Station. Cover fees and opening hours vary between events.

Propaganda Club

In the centre of Lan Kwai Fon, Hong Kong’s throbbing heart of nightlife, sits the renowned Propaganda club. Although famous for being the largest gay venue in town, this long running club has started to welcome a more diverse crowd over the years, especially those who like their music loud and bedtimes late. Also known as just ‘the club’ or ‘PP’, Propaganda only really gets going late on the weekends when the crowds spill out of the nearby bars and pack out the place (you might have to queue after 01:00 for special events). Find it on Hollywood Road, a few minutes’ walk from Central Station.

Premium Sofa Club

Occupying the same space as the legendary XXX club (which moved across town at the start of 2015), Premium Sofa Club carries on the same hipster vibes and underground music policy that its predecessor became so famous for. The name ‘Premium’ is a bit of an ‘in’ joke, and actually a dig at Hong Kong’s other ‘premium’ clubs, synonymous for their high prices, strict dress codes and mainstream pop music. The array of retro, mismatching and cheap looking sofas scattered around the club adds even more irony to its name. Clubbers missing the fun, anything-goes atmosphere of XXX Club should definitely check this place out, as well as anyone serious about their dance music or just wanting to see how young and trendy locals party in Hong Kong.

Red

Red is located in IFC, an impressive shopping centre and despite or because of this fact it's a cool place to hang out – mostly because of the drinks and the rooftop views of Kowloon Peninsula and Victoria Harbour and the Hong Kong skyline. DJs play a smooth mixture of lounge and funk and the décor is cool and stylish.

Rockabilly LKF

This relatively new addition to the Hong Kong nightlife scene is exactly what it says say on the tin: a rocked-themed bar located in the ever-buzzing Lan Kwai Fon district. The retro 1950’s American decor, music policy and beverage list all follow in line with the Rockabilly theme: think exposed brick work, smart bartenders with their hair slicked back, neon signs, burgers and classic American cocktails - all alongside some more contemporary offering in the way of food and drink, such as their long list of imported pale ales. SoHo

Vibrant Soho is Hong Kong’s premier entertainment district featuring one of the longest escalators in the world. The area includes The TakeOut (Asia’s first Comedy Club), restaurants, bars, nightclubs, antique stores and art galleries. Soho is a blend of Chinese and colonial architecture with modern additions, including the escalator and sleek restaurants. The neighbourhood draws a mostly refined expat crowd enjoying a night on the town with a vibe that is decidedly more upmarket than Lan Kwai Fong.

How to get there: To get to Soho take the MTR Island Line to Central Station and Exit via D2. Walk along Queen’s Road and then join the mid-levels escalator.

Stormies

Due to its rather modest size many Lan Kwai Fong drinkers choose to imbibe on the street outside, especially at the weekends when this is one crowded spot. The inside is a mixture of nautical themes while upstairs, Stormies offers a surprisingly good restaurant serving up freshly caught seafood.

Sevva Rooftop Bar

This sexy Central spot is connected to the popular Sevva Restaurant at the exclusive Prince’s Building, and makes for a perfect alfresco bar to enjoy some swanky cocktails and nibbles whilst enjoying the majestic views of Hong Kong’s glistening bay. Seating is ultra-comfortable (think plush sofas taken straight from a rich playboy’s penthouse), but rather limited – so do arrive early or book a table in advance on the weekends. The steep price of drinks and food means this won’t be a place you’ll be frequenting every day (unless you’re working in one of the surrounding bank), however, with views this good, Sevva Bar is a treat well worth the price tag.

The Beer Bay

Combining good views with even better beer, The Beer Bay is an excellent little stop off for visitors using the ferry crossing service, or just those in the mood for a good ale. Perched on ‘Pier 4’ near Central Hong Kong, this cute little spot serves a fine range of imported ales which come in both draft and bottled form. To give you an idea of how extensive the range is, the cheapest beers here start at $35, whilst you’ll pay around 10 times more than that for their most expensive!

The Globe

This British/western themed pub has over 4,000 square feet of floor space, putting it up there with some of the more spacious bars in the Hong Kong nightlife scene. The venue is the bigger and better reincarnation of their previous spot down the road, and just like its predecessor, serves a wide range of largers, ales and pub grub such as sausages, steaks, pies and soups. Decor isn’t overwhelming inspiring, though you’ll be back thanks to the warm and friendly atmosphere as well as that long list of reasonable priced drinks.

The Keg

Right by Stormies, The Keg, some say, is the least pretentious of all Lan Kwai Fongs bars. Designed like a half keg barrel, it has a good selection of beers and friendly drinkers. The bar also has something called Pressure Hour, during which you can keep drinking for half price as long as you stay out of the toilets. Good luck.

Volar Club

Quite possibly Hong Kong’s coolest club – both in terms of the decor and clientele – Volar welcomes a young, dance-hungry crowd most nights of the week who come to party the night away to a diverse range of music genres. The club, which is spread across a basement floor, enjoys a particularly good location in the bustling Lang Kwai Fon area, and has been going strong since it opened its doors in 2004. Dance music fans will particularly appreciate the state-of-the-art sound system and visuals, as well as the frequent international DJs (such as DJ Hype, Diplo and Laurent Garnier) who take to their central booth on a regular basis.

Wooloomooloo Steakhouse & Rooftop

This steakhouse-cum-rooftop bar in Wan Chai offers some great views of Hong Kong, whether you’re tucking into your succulent steak in their fancy indoor dining area, or lapping up the cool breezes on the compact alfresco area outside. Emphasis is more on the dining in the daytime, with a huge range of cuts on the a la carte menu satisfying all meat lovers, as well as a decent two-course deal starting from $140 in the weekdays. If it’s nightlife action you’re after, hit Wooloomooo as the sun is setting and DJs take to their decks every weekend evening.

XXX Club

For years, XXX Club has been at the forefront of Hong Kong’s underground clubbing scene, popular with locals, expats and tourists wanting to get away from the commercial, sometimes overpriced venues in Lan Kwai Fong. To much dismay, the legendary basement spot closed its doors in 2014, but since then the same management has reopened XXX’s doors across town at Sai Wan, just one block away from HKU MTR Station. Revellers can expect the same feel-good, anything goes vibes as well continuity of their previous relaxed dress code, cheap drink prices and bass-heavy music policy encompassing a variety of genres such as techno, garage, house, hip hop and world music.
